What is Therapeutic Horsemanship?

Therapeutic Horsemanship combines the lessons of horsemanship with equine facilitated therapy to provide insight and personal growth. Equine facilitated therapy can be effective as an addition therapy or when talk therapy is not progressing as desired. It's a proven therapy that children and young adults respond to.

Is your child struggling with any of the following situations?

  • Anxiety
  • Social challenges
  • Self-esteem issues
  • Depression
  • Sensitivity or high sensitivity
  • Life transition
  • Losses
  • Entering high school

If you said yes to one or more of the above you should continue to read how Equus for Venus' Therapeutic Horsemanship can help you and your family.

What can I expect?

Participants complete a series of carefully designed horsemanship exercises and experiences that will expose the participant to the following skill
sets:

  • Relationship
  • Trust
  • Respect
  • Leadership
  • Safety
  • Assertiveness
  • Boundaries
  • Focus
  • Follow through
  • Emotional honesty

Winning experience!

Therapeutic horsemanship provides skills that will be invaluable to your child's life in countless ways. This will be hard work, challenging and motivating. The combination of all 12 sessions makes this a winning formula.

How do we begin?

Sessions are arranged in blocks: the first series is 12 sessions.

Subsequent blocks are set up in 6 sessions.

The first two sessions assess the person's horsemanship skills and therapeutic needs, including a conference with parents/guardians to develop goals.

The next 4 to 6 sessions will teach horsemanship skills.

The remaining sessions will be working with the horse and relating these skills to the participant's everyday life.

Program topics may be modified according to the needs of the individual.

The sessions do not include riding.

All work is done on the ground with the horse in a secure setting.

All sessions are held at a private barn to encourage a therapeutic environment.
